Pasankusa Ekadasi – 03 Oct 2025

✨ Spiritual Context – The Story of Pasankusa Ekadashi

Pasankusa Ekadashi, also known as Papankusha Ekadashi, is celebrated during the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) of the Ashwin month. Its significance is described in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, where Lord Krishna lovingly narrates its power to King Yudhishthira.

Once, a cruel hunter named Krodhana lived in the Vindhya forest. His heart was hard and his actions ruthless—he killed animals mercilessly, ignored dharma, and cared only for his own survival. Yet, due to some past merit, he unknowingly observed Pasankusa Ekadashi by not eating grains and refraining from hunting on that day.

Though Krodhana had no intention of following Ekadashi, his accidental observance pleased Lord Vishnu. When Yama-dutas arrived at his death, ready to take him to the hellish realms, the Vishnu-dutas appeared and intervened. “This soul unknowingly honored the holy Ekadashi. He is under Lord Vishnu’s protection.”

Yama’s messengers retreated in defeat, and Krodhana was lifted by Vishnu’s mercy, purified of his sins.

When King Yudhishthira heard this, he was astonished. Lord Krishna explained, “Even unconscious observance of Ekadashi brings immense benefit. But one who follows it with devotion attains My eternal abode.”

The name “Pasankusa” comes from “pasha” (bondage) and “ankusha” (goad). This Ekadashi cuts the cords of sinful reactions and pushes the soul forward on the path of devotion, just like a goad urges an elephant.

The Lord affirms: “One who observes this Ekadashi and worships Me with Tulasi, incense, lamps, and fruits will never take birth in this world again.”

Thus, Pasankusa Ekadashi stands as a powerful vrata that destroys sin, uplifts fallen souls, and grants entry into Vaikuntha, the eternal spiritual realm.

📜 Importance Based on Scriptures

Lord Krishna declares in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana that Pasankusa Ekadashi is more powerful than all charities, sacrifices, and austerities combined. Fasting on this day liberates a person from all sinful reactions and grants protection from Yamaraja.

This Ekadashi is so merciful that even an accidental observance—like forgetting to eat grains—brings auspiciousness. Imagine the reward when one follows it consciously and devotionally!

Scriptures also state that one who worships Lord Padmanabha (Vishnu) on this day with Tulasi, lamps, incense, and prayers not only liberates himself but also uplifts ten generations of his ancestors and descendants.

Pasankusa Ekadashi is ideal for:

  • Seeking forgiveness for past mistakes
  • Overcoming deep-seated attachments or habits
  • Offering prayers for the liberation of ancestors
  • Reaffirming one’s surrender to Lord Vishnu

Vaishnavas especially love this Ekadashi as it prepares the heart for Kartika Month, which follows soon after. By cleansing the consciousness through fasting and prayer, one becomes more receptive to Lord Krishna’s mercy.

This day is a doorway to freedom and divine connection, and its sincere observance never goes unnoticed by the Lord.

🛕 Rituals and Observance

The rituals of Pasankusa Ekadashi begin at sunrise on 3 October 2025 (Friday) and continue until sunrise the next day. Devotees should:

  • Bathe early and take a sankalpa to observe the Ekadashi fast
  • Refrain from grains, beans, pulses, onion, garlic, and tamasic foods
  • Offer prayers, Tulasi leaves, incense, and ghee lamps to Lord Vishnu
  • Chant the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra and read scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita or Ekadashi Mahatmya
  • Remain focused on spiritual thoughts, avoiding idle talk, digital distractions, and negative emotions

Fasting options include:

  • Nirjala (no food or water) – for advanced devotees
  • Phalahar (fruits and nuts) – for regular observers
  • Upavasa with milk and Ekadashi-friendly preparations – for those with health considerations

The heart of the vrata lies in intent and consciousness. A simple offering made with love is better than elaborate rituals done mechanically.

On this day, devotees also honour Tulasi Devi, light extra lamps, and offer heartfelt kirtan or bhajan to the Lord.

Pasankusa Ekadashi is about letting go of impurities and embracing divine remembrance, fully and joyfully.

🌍 Why This Ekadashi Matters in Kali Yuga

In Kali Yuga — the age of hypocrisy, quarrel, and distraction — Pasankusa Ekadashi acts like a spiritual reset button.

We live in a world where people are bound by habits, addictions, anxieties, and unresolved karma. The name “Pasankusa” itself refers to breaking these bonds and guiding the soul forward.

In Kali Yuga, performing complicated yajnas or pilgrimages is difficult. But fasting on Ekadashi, chanting Krishna’s names, and offering simple devotion gives the same result — or more.

This Ekadashi is especially relevant for:

  • People feeling stuck in bad habits
  • Those seeking to purify their past
  • Devotees preparing for the Kartika Vrata
  • Anyone who wants to start fresh in their spiritual life

Even a fallen soul like the hunter Krodhana was uplifted just by accidental observance. How much more will the Lord bless us if we observe it intentionally with love?

Srila Prabhupada emphasized that Ekadashi is the mother of devotion. In a distracted age, it brings us back to our essence — Krishna consciousness.

🧠 Scientific Reasoning

Fasting on Ekadashi is not only spiritually potent — it has scientifically proven health benefits.

✔️ Fasting helps trigger autophagy, a process where the body clears out dead or dysfunctional cells, promoting cellular repair.

✔️ It enhances metabolism, stabilizes insulin levels, and supports mental clarity.

✔️ By avoiding heavy grains and starches, the digestive system gets a break, allowing energy to be redirected toward healing and regeneration.

✔️ The mind becomes calmer, more meditative — ideal for japa, reflection, and self-inquiry.

✔️ Ayurvedic tradition also supports Ekadashi fasting, especially during lunar phases, as they influence water content and energy balance in the body.

The spiritual wisdom behind fasting is to weaken the pull of the senses and strengthen the voice of the soul. Fasting disciplines the mind, creating space for divine remembrance.

When aligned with prayer, chanting, and meditation, Pasankusa Ekadashi becomes a whole-being experience — body, mind, and soul unified in pursuit of higher consciousness.
